Social Justice Report - November 25, 2010

1. Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomar) memorial Day held on the fourth Saturday in November each year is declared by Saskatchewan Legislation, to be the "Ukrainian Famine and Genocide Memorial Day for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Gamine and Genocide of 1932-1933, and for reflecting on lessons to be learned from this event.

Stalin's communist regime committed a horrendous act of genocide against up to ten million Ukrainians - they were subjected to starvation.  This memorial day will be marked by Ukrainian communities in our province, at Yorkton, Battlefords, and Saskatoon. On Saturday November 27, 2010 remember the Ukrainian victims of the famine.

2. This Sunday  (November 28/10) marks the beginning of Advent. Many of us mark this by giving - by support to local charity - our C.W.L is knitting mitts & toques, to be given to children in Esterhazy, as well for needy children in Regina (Kindergarten to Grade 6).  There is a umbrella non-profit group in Regina called "Angels 4-Warmth"  its purpose is to help keep the less fortunate warm - one stitch at a time - sweaters, scarfs, mitts, hats - knit, crochet, sew.  Items may be dropped off at old Fasion Foods in Lorne Avenue Drugs in Regina and at Shelwin House in Yorkton.

3. St. anthony's hospital will host a Grief Workshop - "Facing the Holidays when some one you love has died" being held on Sunday, December 12/10 at 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the Serenity Room, St. Anthony's Hospital in Esterhazy.

4. Several people I know prefer to give a donation to a favorite charity, rather than a gift, for a family member.  Chalice Canada would be a choice supported by the provincial C.W.L..  Chalice Canada is a Catholic organization, raising funds for children & family in needy countires.

5. Bethelhem Live, is being held in Moosomin November 26 & 27, 2010.
